NOTES: There are four models shown in the currently available ads that look identical and are quite perplexing, particularly in 1948 and 1949, when there appear to be two identical models advertised concurrently. In order of appearance in the ads, along with the date of the ads that show them, those models are:
- 1943 - Comptroller (17J, yellow gold filled case, gold hands and numerals, leather strap)
- 1945/46 - Knickbocker (17J, natural gold, basketweave band)
- 1947/49 - Clinton (17J, yellow gold, basketweave band in '47; seed band in '49)
- 1948/49 - Chief (17J, yellow gold, seed band)
I have not attempted to analyze subtle differences between the various numbering styles and dials, as I believe those are unreliable as a method of distinguishing between models--largely because the ads do not describe those features and not all the ads are clear enough to tell the difference by sight, and also because dials can be changed. Most of the ads for these four watches do not provide much in the way of descriptive text; any details provided have been noted above. The subject watch has been identified as the Knickerbocker based on the date of the watch and the date of the advertisement.
